Modesty Before Allah and Remembering Death
Hazrat Aayesha Siddeeqa rz narrated that once the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, was seated on the mimbar and the companions were present in front in the form of a circle. He, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, said, O people, have such modesty before Allah Ta‘ala as is the right of having modesty before Allah Ta‘ala. The companions said, O Prophet of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, we do have haya before Allah Ta‘ala.
He, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, said, whoever among you has haya before Allah Ta‘ala, it is necessary for him that no night passes over him without his death being before his eyes.
It is necessary for him to guard his stomach, and also guard that which his stomach has enclosed. And to guard his head, and also guard that which his head has enclosed.
It is necessary for him to remember death, and to remember that after dying the whole body will break apart and become dust.
It is necessary for him to abandon the adornment of the world.
Ulama have written that guarding the head means that one should not bow before anyone other than Allah Ta‘ala, neither for worship nor for respect, even to the extent of not greeting by bowing. And what the head has enclosed means to guard the eye, ear, and tongue. All these things are included under the head, guard all of them.
Similarly, guarding the stomach means to guard the stomach from doubtful wealth, to guard from haram wealth. And what the stomach has enclosed means those things that are near the stomach, like the private parts, hands, feet, and heart. Guard all of these. Imam Nawawi rh says that it is mustahab to read this hadith often.
Keep this in mind, death is true but there is doubt about getting a shroud. No one knows in what condition death will come, where it will come, at what place death will come, will it come in my house or outside, will it come in my country or in a foreign land.
Many times it is read in newspapers that a very respected man of the area died in a foreign place in such a way that people thought him to be unclaimed and buried him, and at that time there was not even a single eye to weep for him.
In newspapers every day many such news are found. May Allah Ta‘ala protect us all from such a death and may all our end be on iman. May Allah Ta‘ala grant us all an honorable death. Ameen.
A man from Sargodha was killed by enemies and thrown into the Jhelum river. Passing through the river water he came into a canal. His body got spoiled. One day the police took it out and handed it over to the people of a village saying this is the body of a muslim, bury it. The loudspeaker was opened and it was announced that it is an unclaimed body, everyone should contribute for its shroud. Later it was found that he had two wives, was father of four sons, and was owner of 15 murabba of land. Such a responsible man was made to wear a shroud of charity.
Many great kings came in this world, many very wealthy people, but they could not take their wealth and goods ahead with them. To the extent that when their grave was made, no carpet was spread below in the grave, not even a piece of velvet was placed, no arrangement for light was made there. The grave is measured according to the height of the body.
A piece of land two yards long is your small house.
