The Supplications Before and After Eating in the Light of Hadith

Food is one of the greatest blessings that Allah has bestowed upon humanity. Every day, millions of people around the world struggle to find enough food to satisfy their hunger, while many others enjoy meals without reflecting upon the source of this blessing. Islam teaches Muslims to view food not merely as a means of survival but as a gift from Allah that deserves gratitude, respect, and proper manners.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his Ummah that even ordinary daily activities can become acts of worship when performed according to the Sunnah. Eating is one of those activities. Through simple supplications and proper etiquette, a believer can earn reward while enjoying the blessings that Allah has provided.

One of the first teachings of Islam regarding food is to begin with the remembrance of Allah. Before taking the first bite, a Muslim should say:

"Bismillah"
"In the Name of Allah."

Although these words are short and simple, they carry immense meaning. By saying "Bismillah," a believer acknowledges that the food before him is a gift from Allah and seeks His blessings in it. Beginning with the name of Allah transforms an ordinary meal into an act connected with faith and worship.

The importance of saying "Bismillah" before eating is emphasized in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed Muslims to mention Allah's name before beginning their meals. He taught that the remembrance of Allah protects a person from the influence of Shaytan and brings blessings into the food.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"When one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah. If he forgets to mention the name of Allah at the beginning, then let him say: Bismillahi Awwalahu wa Aakhirahu."

This hadith demonstrates the mercy and ease of Islam. Even if a person forgets to say "Bismillah" before eating, he is not deprived of the opportunity to remember Allah. Instead, he can recite:

"Bismillahi Awwalahu wa Aakhirahu"
"In the Name of Allah at its beginning and at its end."

This teaching reminds believers that Allah loves those who turn back to Him, even after forgetting or making mistakes.

The Sunnah also teaches several etiquettes related to eating. Among them is eating with the right hand. The Prophet ﷺ emphasized this practice and encouraged Muslims to develop habits that reflect cleanliness, discipline, and respect.

A famous narration describes how the Prophet ﷺ advised a young companion during a meal. He said:

"O young boy, mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you."

This brief advice contains profound lessons. First, the Prophet ﷺ instructed the child to remember Allah. Second, he taught the use of the right hand while eating. Third, he encouraged good manners by advising him to eat from the portion nearest to him.

These teachings demonstrate that Islam pays attention even to the smallest details of daily life. Good manners at the dining table are considered part of a believer's character and reflect gratitude toward Allah.

The act of eating should never be accompanied by arrogance, wastefulness, or ingratitude. A Muslim understands that every grain of food is a blessing from Allah. Therefore, food should be respected and appreciated rather than wasted.

After finishing a meal, the Sunnah teaches believers to thank Allah for the blessing they have received. Gratitude is one of the central themes of Islam. The Quran repeatedly reminds believers to be thankful, and the Prophet ﷺ demonstrated gratitude in every aspect of his life.

One of the most beautiful supplications taught by the Prophet ﷺ after eating is:

"Alhamdulillahil-Ladhi At'amani Haza Wa Razaqaneehi Min Ghairi Hawlin Minni Wa La Quwwah."

Its meaning is:

"All praise belongs to Allah who fed me this food and provided it for me without any power or strength from myself."

This supplication teaches humility and gratitude. It reminds believers that no matter how hard they work, the ultimate provider is Allah. The food on their table is not solely the result of personal effort but a gift granted by the Creator.

The virtue of reciting this supplication is mentioned in a hadith of the Prophet ﷺ. He said that whoever recites this dua after eating will have his previous sins forgiven.

This immense reward highlights the importance of gratitude in Islam. Allah loves those who acknowledge His blessings and thank Him sincerely. A few moments of remembrance after a meal can become a source of tremendous reward and forgiveness.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself was a model of gratitude. Whenever he ate, he thanked Allah. He never complained about food. If he liked a meal, he ate it, and if he did not prefer it, he simply left it without criticizing it.

This behavior teaches Muslims an important lesson. Complaining excessively about food reflects ingratitude, while appreciating what Allah has provided nurtures contentment and good character.

The companions of the Prophet ﷺ carefully followed these teachings. They understood that saying "Bismillah" before eating and thanking Allah afterward were not mere rituals. Rather, they were acts of worship that strengthened a person's relationship with Allah.

Islam encourages believers to remain conscious of Allah throughout the day. Since eating is an activity performed daily, it provides repeated opportunities to remember Allah and earn reward. A believer who consistently follows these Sunnahs turns every meal into a means of drawing closer to Allah.

These supplications also help develop mindfulness. Modern life often encourages people to eat quickly without reflection. The Sunnah, however, teaches believers to pause, remember Allah, and recognize His blessings before and after eating.

When a Muslim says "Bismillah" before a meal, he remembers the Provider. When he says "Alhamdulillah" afterward, he expresses gratitude for the blessing received. In this way, the meal begins and ends with the remembrance of Allah.

Another important lesson derived from these supplications is reliance upon Allah. The post-meal dua specifically acknowledges that food reaches a person not through personal power alone but through Allah's mercy and provision. This understanding cultivates humility and trust in the Creator.

Parents should teach these supplications to their children from an early age. Children who grow up saying "Bismillah" before eating and thanking Allah afterward develop habits that remain with them throughout life. These simple practices help build a strong Islamic identity and foster gratitude from a young age.

The dining table can become a place of spiritual growth when family members practice these Sunnahs together. Parents who remind their children to recite the supplications before and after eating are not only teaching manners but also nurturing faith.

In a world where many blessings are often taken for granted, these supplications serve as powerful reminders of Allah's generosity. Every meal represents countless blessings working together: health, provision, transportation, agriculture, rain, sunlight, and countless other favors granted by Allah.

Reflecting upon these blessings naturally leads to gratitude. The believer recognizes that none of these blessings would be possible without the mercy of Allah. Therefore, thanking Him becomes both a duty and a privilege.

The beauty of Islam lies in its ability to connect every aspect of life to worship. Eating, drinking, sleeping, working, and other daily activities become opportunities to remember Allah when performed according to the Sunnah.

The supplication before eating begins with the name of Allah, and the supplication after eating ends with praise to Allah. Together, they create a complete cycle of remembrance that surrounds one of life's most common activities.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not leave his followers without guidance in even the smallest matters. His teachings regarding food demonstrate the comprehensive nature of Islam and its concern for both spiritual and practical aspects of life.

Every believer should strive to preserve these beautiful Sunnahs. The effort required is minimal, yet the rewards are immense. Through a few simple words, a Muslim can gain blessings, protection, gratitude, forgiveness, and closeness to Allah.

May Allah grant us the ability to remember Him before and after every meal, to appreciate His countless blessings, and to follow the Sunnah of His beloved Messenger ﷺ in all aspects of our lives. May He make us among those who are grateful for His favors and who earn His pleasure through sincere remembrance and gratitude. Ameen.

ROMAN URDU TRANSLATION

Khane Se Pehle Aur Khane Ke Baad Ki Dua – Ahadees Ki Roshni Mein

Khane peene ke adaab bhi Sunnat ka aham hissa hain.

Jab Musalman "Bismillah" kehta hai to woh iqrar karta hai ke us ke samne jo khana maujood hai woh Allah Ta'ala ki ata aur rehmat hai. Is tarah woh apne khane ka aghaz Allah ke naam se karta hai aur us mein barkat hasil karta hai.

Nabi Kareem ﷺ ne farmaya:

"Jab tum mein se koi khana khaye to Allah ka naam le."

Yeh hadees hamein batati hai ke khane se pehle Allah ka zikr karna Sunnat hai aur is mein bohat barkat hai. Allah ka naam lene se Shaytan khane mein shareek nahi hota aur khane mein barkat paida hoti hai.

Kabhi kabhi insaan bhool jata hai aur khana shuru kar leta hai. Islam rehmat aur asani ka deen hai. Agar koi shakhs khana shuru karne ke baad yaad kare ke us ne Bismillah nahi padhi to Nabi Kareem ﷺ ne us ke liye yeh dua sikhayi:

"Bismillahi Awwalahu Wa Aakhirahu"

Yani:

"Allah ke naam se, is ke shuru mein bhi aur is ke aakhir mein bhi."

Yeh Sunnat hamein sikhati hai ke agar hum se bhool ho jaye to Allah ki taraf ruju karna chahiye aur us ka zikr jari rakhna chahiye.

Khane ke hawale se Nabi Kareem ﷺ ne sirf dua hi nahi sikhayi balkeh khane ke adaab bhi bayan farmaye. Ek martaba Hazrat Umar bin Abi Salamah رضي الله عنه bachpan mein Nabi Kareem ﷺ ke sath khana kha rahe the. Aap ﷺ ne unhein farmaya:

"Aye bachche! Allah ka naam lo, daaye haath se khao aur apne samne se khao."

Yeh chhoti si naseehat Islami akhlaq aur adaab ka khoobsurat majmua hai. Is mein Allah ka zikr, daaye haath ka istemal aur khane ke waqt tameez aur intizam sab shamil hain.

Islam hamein sikhata hai ke khana adab aur shukar ke sath khana chahiye. Nabi Kareem ﷺ agar kisi khane ko pasand farmate to kha lete aur agar pasand na hota to khamoshi se chhor dete, magar us mein kabhi aib nahi nikalte the.

Jab Musalman khana mukammal kar le to usay Allah Ta'ala ka shukar ada karna chahiye. Isi liye Nabi Kareem ﷺ ne khane ke baad ek azeem dua sikhayi:

"Alhamdulillahil-Ladhi At'amani Haza Wa Razaqaneehi Min Ghairi Hawlin Minni Wa La Quwwah."

Is ka ma'na hai:

"Tamam tareefein Allah ke liye hain jis ne mujhe yeh khana khilaya aur mujhe yeh rizq ata farmaya bina meri kisi taqat aur quwwat ke."

Insaan kitni bhi mehnat kare, asal rizq dene wali zaat Allah Ta'ala hi hai. Kheton mein fasal ugaane wala, baarish barsane wala, rizq paida karne wala aur use ham tak pohnchane wala Allah hi hai.

Nabi Kareem ﷺ ne is dua ki bohat badi fazeelat bayan farmayi. Aap ﷺ ne farmaya:

"Jo shakhs khana khane ke baad yeh dua padhe us ke pehle gunah maaf kar diye jate hain."

Yeh Allah ki kitni badi rehmat hai ke woh apne bandon ko har chhote amal par bhi ajar aur sawab ata farmata hai.

Nabi Kareem ﷺ ki zindagi shukar ka namoona thi. Aap ﷺ har ne'mat par Allah ka shukar ada farmate the. Khane ke baad bhi aap ﷺ Allah ki hamd aur sana bayan farmate the. Yeh hamein sikhata hai ke ne'mat milne ke baad shukar karna momin ki pehchan hai.

Sahaba Kiram رضی اللہ عنہم bhi in duaaon aur adaab ka bohat ehtimam farmate the. Unhein maloom tha ke Nabi Kareem ﷺ ki har taleem duniya aur aakhirat ki bhalai ka zariya hai.

Khane se pehle aur baad ki duayein Musalman ko Allah ke qareeb karti hain. Jab banda khana shuru karne se pehle Allah ko yaad karta hai aur khatam karne ke baad us ka shukar ada karta hai to us ka poora amal ibadat ban jata hai.

Jab bachay "Bismillah" ke sath khana shuru karte hain aur "Alhamdulillah" ke sath khatam karte hain to un ke dilon mein Allah ki muhabbat aur shukar ka jazba paida hota hai.

Ghar ka dastarkhwan sirf khana khane ki jagah nahi hona chahiye balkeh Allah ke zikr aur Sunnat par amal ka markaz bhi hona chahiye. Jab ghar ke afrad mil kar Sunnat ke mutabiq khana khate hain to us ghar mein barkat nazil hoti hai.

Yeh chand alfaaz zaban par lana bohat asaan hai lekin un ke natayij aur sawab bohat azeem hain.

Allah Ta'ala hamein khane se pehle aur baad mein us ka zikr karne ki taufeeq ata farmaye, hamein har ne'mat par us ka shukar ada karne wala banaye aur Nabi Kareem ﷺ ki Sunnat par amal karne ki taufeeq naseeb farmaye. Ameen.
