Invitation is the certain means of salvation
Enjoining good and forbidding evil among the Ummah has weakened because this effort came to be viewed as a means of reforming others alone.
Forbidding evil is, first and foremost, for the benefit of the one who forbids it. Likewise, enjoining good develops within a person the ability to practice goodness himself.
When this effort is done only for the sake of changing others, it often results in either disappointment or anger when people refuse to accept the message.
It is mentioned in the sayings of Hazrat Thanvi (رØمه الله):
"Whenever I wished to develop a quality within myself, I would invite others toward it. Whenever I wished to remove a fault from myself, I would forbid others from it."
Forbidding evil creates hatred for sin within the caller and strengthens his ability to avoid it. Likewise, encouraging good nurtures goodness within the caller himself.
Invitation is the certain means of salvation for the caller
Even if the invitation is given to people upon whom punishment has already become inevitable, the effort should continue.
When they were asked, "Why do you continue inviting people who will not believe?" they replied:
"We do so for two reasons. First, so that we may fulfill our responsibility before Allah. Second, because we still hope that Allah may guide even such people to righteousness."
Simply writing or publishing a message does not fulfill the responsibility. The message must reach people's hearts and ears. Merely conveying information is not true tabligh.
A sign outside a mosque once read, "Establish prayer," while people were sleeping beneath it. That written message alone brought no benefit to those sleeping. This is not tabligh.
In this way, information may spread, but neither the religion nor Islam truly spreads. Islam spreads when Muslims carry Islam in their lives. The spread of information about Islam is not the same as the spread of Islam itself.
The invitation to the religion should be revived according to the method of Prophethood. The Messenger of Allah ï·º used to send groups of his Companions to convey the message.
Merely spending time is not the objective
The real purpose is to revive within the Ummah everything that the Messenger of Allah ï·º brought.
This Ummah is like flowing water. As long as it remains active like flowing water, it stays pure and purifies others.
If it becomes stagnant and the movement of religion stops, then every form of corruption—attachment to worldly means, negligence of the Hereafter, disobedience to Allah, weakness in deeds, and corruption in dealings—will pollute it. It will not only become corrupt itself but also become a cause of harm for others.
This is an Ummah of guidance. An Ummah is one that teaches the religion to others, while a true servant is one who completely obeys Allah and His Messenger ï·º.
Satan deceives people by saying, "First become perfect in practice, then invite others." This is incorrect. Perfect knowledge and practice are not conditions for giving dawah. Rather, dawah itself helps a person improve his own faith and actions.
Whoever is concerned only about protecting his own religion and does not care about the irreligion of others will eventually be affected by it as well. If you do not extinguish your neighbor's fire, your own house will eventually burn.
Continue speaking about tawheed
Proclaim the Oneness of Allah with regard to His names and attributes. Continue speaking about Tawheed, for it is the foundation of all deeds. Otherwise, showing off (riya) may enter one's actions.
True power belongs only to Allah. The means of benefiting from His power are through obeying His commands, not by relying on worldly causes themselves.
By asking Allah merely for worldly means, we have often created hardships for ourselves.
Success lies in the religion. This reality cannot be fully understood without reflecting upon the unseen help granted to the Prophets and the Companions.
Allah wants us to understand that He will help us just as He helped the Prophets and the noble Companions.
The Prophets and the Companions also adopted worldly means. Some Prophets worked as shepherds, carpenters, or blacksmiths, while many Companions engaged in farming and trade. Yet they were remembered for their faith, not for their professions—they were known as the Muhajirun and the Ansar.
Present your deeds before Allah
People often present their worldly means before Allah, saying, "This is my business, so grant me profit." However, what should truly be presented before Allah are righteous deeds.
The three men trapped inside the cave each presented one of their sincere good deeds before Allah.
Allah's promises are attached to obedience to His commands. Patience is not merely enduring difficult circumstances; true patience is remaining firm upon Allah's commands despite hardships.
Allah says to the people of Hell that whether they remain patient or not, their punishment will not be reduced.
In the Qur'an, patience is always mentioned alongside taqwa, and fasting has been described as patience.
Gratitude means using every part of the body according to Allah's commands, for every limb benefits from the blessings He has bestowed.
Purification comes before prayer
Just as the body must be purified from major impurity before prayer, every drop of one's earnings should also be pure.
Ablution, purification, and ritual bathing cleanse the outward body, but they do not purify the inner self.
Unlawful earnings cause supplications to be rejected. Therefore, before anything else, one's income must conform to Allah's commands. This is like purification before prayer.
Acts of worship alone do not correct one's dealings. Rather, when dealings are corrected according to Islam, all acts of worship become complete, and the entire religion becomes sound.
Allah has not declared war against those committing sins except in the case of consuming usury (riba).
Even knowledgeable people may claim that circumstances forced them into wrongdoing.
There was hardly any wealthy Companion who left this world without fear and tears, worrying that perhaps Allah had already given them their reward in this world.
Those who earn according to Allah's commands will also spend according to His commands.
