When Does Ghusl Become Obligatory?
Hazrat Ayesha (RA) narrates that the Prophet (SAW) was asked: "If a man wakes up and finds wetness on his clothes but does not remember having a wet dream, is ghusl obligatory on him?"
The Prophet (SAW) replied: "This person must do ghusl."
He was then asked: "A man had a wet dream but found no wetness when he woke up. Is ghusl obligatory on him?"
The Prophet (SAW) replied: "Ghusl is not obligatory on this person."
After this, Hazrat Umm Salama (RA) asked about women: "If a woman wakes up and finds wetness, is ghusl obligatory on her?"
The Prophet (SAW) replied: "Yes, in this case ghusl is obligatory on a woman too, because women are the counterparts of men."
_Ref: Mishkat 48, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood_
*Explanation:* Sometimes due to natural urges, men and women have wet dreams and semen is discharged. If semen is discharged, ghusl becomes obligatory and the rulings of janabah apply. If only a dream is seen but no wetness is found upon waking, ghusl is not obligatory. This Hadith explains that ruling.
Hazrat Ayesha (RA) narrates that the Prophet (SAW) said: "When the circumcised part of a man enters the private part of a woman, ghusl becomes obligatory on both."
Hazrat Ayesha (RA) added: "The Prophet (SAW) and I did this, then we both performed ghusl."
_Ref: Mishkat 48, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah_
*Explanation:* If a husband and wife engage in intercourse, ghusl becomes obligatory for both as soon as the head of the male organ enters, whether semen is discharged or not.
*Benefit:* Ghusl becomes obligatory on a woman for four reasons. Remember well:
1. End of menstruation
2. End of postnatal bleeding
3. Discharge of semen in a dream
4. Intercourse with husband, whether semen is discharged or not
*Ruling:* If a man commits unnatural intercourse through the back passage and the head enters, ghusl is still obligatory on both, whether semen is discharged or not. This is a severe sin and haram. Hadith mentions curse for this act.
*Impurity of One Who Needs Ghusl*
Hazrat Ayesha (RA) narrates: "When ghusl was obligatory on me and the Prophet (SAW), he would perform ghusl before me. Before I did ghusl, he would seek warmth from me after his ghusl."
_Ref: Mishkat 49, Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi_
*Explanation:* This Hadith shows that a person who needs ghusl is not physically impure. Meeting, talking, and sitting with them is permissible. However, if there is actual impurity on their body and it touches someone else, that part becomes impure.
If ghusl is obligatory on a spouse, and one performs ghusl first while the other has not yet, there is no harm in lying together. The other can do ghusl later.
Due to legal impurity, saliva and sweat do not become impure. If drops of used ghusl water fall into clean water without touching actual impurity, the water remains pure. If such drops fall on clothes, the clothes remain pure.
If ghusl is obligatory, eating, drinking, and sleeping are permissible. However, it is better to do wudu first before eating, drinking, or sleeping.
*Angels Stay Away from a Junub*
Hazrat Ali (RA) narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said: "Angels do not enter a house that has a picture, a dog, or a junub person."
_Ref: Mishkat 50, Abu Dawood, Nasa'i_
*Explanation:* It is permissible for a junub person to delay ghusl until prayer time. But it is better to do ghusl quickly because angels feel discomfort entering a house with a junub person.
However, one Hadith states that if a junub person does wudu, angels do not avoid coming near them. _Mishkat 50, Abu Dawood_. So if you feel lazy about ghusl, at least do wudu. Especially at night, sleep after wudu. Then do ghusl after Fajr adhan and pray Fajr. If a junub person wants to eat, it is better to do wudu first.
Keeping a dog as a pet is strictly prohibited. However, dogs can be kept for guarding crops or hunting.
These things prevent angels of mercy from entering the house. Avoid them.
