A Reminder on Ending the Day with the Remembrance of Allah

All praise belongs to Allah سبحانه وتعالى, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the One who grants life and causes death, and the One in whose Hand lies our return. Every day that passes from our lives brings us closer to our meeting with Allah. A believer, therefore, strives to begin the day with the remembrance of Allah and to end the day with the remembrance of Allah.

Sleep is not merely a time of rest. In reality, sleep is a minor form of death. Allah سبحانه وتعالى reminds us in the Noble Qur’an:

اللَّهُ يَتَوَفَّى الْأَنْفُسَ حِينَ مَوْتِهَا وَالَّتِي لَمْ تَمُتْ فِي مَنَامِهَا

"Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die during their sleep." (Surah Az-Zumar 39:42)

This verse teaches us that when a person goes to sleep, his soul is entrusted to Allah. No one knows whether he will awaken the next morning or whether that night will be his last. For this reason, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught his Ummah to remember Allah before sleeping, seek forgiveness for their sins, and place their trust completely in their Lord.

The believer should never consider bedtime to be an ordinary moment. Rather, it is a precious opportunity to turn to Allah, repent sincerely, and fill the final moments of the day with worship.

The Prophet ﷺ would recite many supplications before sleeping and encouraged his companions to do the same. Among the most famous supplications is:

بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

"O Allah, in Your Name I die and I live."

This short yet powerful supplication reminds a believer that life and death are entirely in the Hands of Allah. Every night we surrender ourselves to Him, hoping that He will protect us and allow us to awaken in a state of faith and gratitude.

A Muslim should also recite:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ وَوَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ

This beautiful supplication contains complete submission to Allah. It teaches the believer to place all affairs in the Hands of Allah and rely upon Him alone.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also instructed the believers to recite the last two verses of before sleeping. He said that whoever recites them at night, they will be sufficient for him. These verses contain faith, submission, repentance, and trust in Allah.

Among the Sunnahs before sleeping is the recitation of:

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ

The Prophet ﷺ would recite these chapters, blow lightly into his hands, and wipe them over his body. Through this Sunnah, a believer seeks Allah's protection from every evil, harm, jealousy, and whispering of Shaytan.

Another important practice before sleeping is seeking forgiveness. Every human being commits mistakes throughout the day. Some sins are committed knowingly, while others occur unintentionally. Therefore, a believer should never sleep without repentance.

"I seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him."

The one who repents sincerely before sleeping may awaken with a purified heart and forgiven sins by the mercy of Allah.

The remembrance of Allah before sleeping also protects a person from fear, anxiety, and loneliness. Many people today suffer from stress and restlessness despite having worldly comforts. The true peace of the heart is found only in remembering Allah.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ

"Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." (Surah Ar-Ra'd 13:28)

When a believer lies down remembering Allah, his heart becomes calm because he knows that his affairs are in the Hands of the Most Merciful.

The Prophet ﷺ also taught his beloved daughter and to recite before sleeping:

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ

These words are among the greatest treasures of remembrance. They remind a believer of Allah's perfection, praise, and greatness before he closes his eyes for the night.

A Muslim should also examine his heart before sleeping. If he has wronged anyone, he should intend to correct his mistake. If he harbors hatred, envy, or resentment, he should strive to remove it. The heart that sleeps with forgiveness and remembrance is far closer to Allah than a heart filled with grudges and worldly concerns.

The scholars have mentioned that the pious predecessors would treat bedtime as a moment of worship. They would perform wudu, recite Qur'an, make dhikr, seek forgiveness, and then sleep in a state of purity. They understood that sleep itself can become an act of worship when it is accompanied by the remembrance of Allah and the intention of gaining strength to obey Him.

Every night is an opportunity. Some people go to sleep after wasting their time in heedlessness, entertainment, and sinful activities. Others end their day with repentance, Qur'an, and dhikr. The difference between these two people becomes apparent in the tranquility of their hearts and the blessings in their lives.

Imagine standing before Allah after your final sleep. Would you not wish that your last words were words of remembrance? Would you not wish that your final moments were spent seeking forgiveness and praising Allah?

For this reason, a believer should make it a habit never to sleep without remembering Allah. Even if one is tired, a few moments spent in dhikr can bring immense rewards and blessings.

Before sleeping, make sincere dua:

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَاحْفَظْنِي وَاجْعَلْ نَوْمِي رَاحَةً لِي وَعِبَادَةً أَتَقَوَّى بِهَا عَلَى طَاعَتِكَ

"O Allah, forgive my sins, have mercy upon me, protect me, and make my sleep a means of rest and a source of strength for Your obedience."

The believer who sleeps while remembering Allah places himself under the care of the Most Merciful. His night becomes blessed, his heart becomes peaceful, and his soul finds comfort in the remembrance of its Lord.

May Allah سبحانه وتعالى grant us the ability to remember Him abundantly before sleeping, protect us throughout the night, forgive our shortcomings, and allow us to awaken every morning in a state of faith, gratitude, and obedience.

Sone Se Pehle Ke Azkar Ki Ahmiyat

Allah Ki Yaad Ke Sath Din Ka Ikhtitam

Tamam tareefain Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala ke liye hain jo tamam jahanon ka Rab hai, jis ke qabze mein zindagi aur maut hai aur jis ki taraf ham sab ko laut kar jana hai. Hamari zindagi ka har din hamein Allah se mulaqat ke qareeb kar raha hai. Is liye ek momin ki koshish hoti hai ke jis tarah wo apne din ka aaghaz Allah ki yaad se kare, usi tarah apne din ka ikhtitam bhi Allah ki yaad ke sath kare.

Neend sirf jism ke aaram ka naam nahi, balkeh ye ek choti maut ki tarah hai. Allah Ta'ala Qur'an Majeed mein irshad farmata hai:

"Allah logon ki roohon ko unki maut ke waqt qabz karta hai aur jo nahi martay unki roohon ko unki neend mein qabz kar leta hai." (Surah Az-Zumar: 42)

Ye ayat hamein yaad dilati hai ke jab hum sone ke liye lete hain to hamari rooh Allah ke hawale ho jati hai. Hamein maloom nahi hota ke hum agli subah uth payenge ya nahi. Isi liye Nabi Kareem ﷺ ne ummat ko taleem di ke sone se pehle Allah ka zikr karein, apne gunahon ki maafi maangein aur apne tamam mamlaat Allah ke supurd kar dein.

Momin ke liye sone ka waqt bhi ibadat ka mauqa hai. Ye wo lamha hai jab banda apne Rab ke samne apni kamzori, apni zaroorat aur apni muhabbat ka izhar karta hai.

"Bismika Allahumma amootu wa ahya."

"Aye Allah! Main Tere Naam ke sath marta hoon aur Tere Naam ke sath zinda hota hoon."

Ye mukhtasar magar bohat azeem dua hai jo hamein yaad dilati hai ke zindagi aur maut sirf Allah ke ikhtiyar mein hai.

Isi tarah Nabi ﷺ ne ye dua bhi sikhayi:

Ye dua Allah par poora bharosa aur apne aap ko uske hawale kar dene ka izhar hai.

Hadees mein aata hai ke jo shakhs raat ko in ayaton ko padh leta hai wo uske liye kaafi ho jati hain. In ayaton mein iman, itaat, dua aur Allah par tawakkul ka paigham hai.

Sone se pehle Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq aur Surah An-Naas padhna bhi Sunnat hai. Nabi ﷺ in suraton ko padh kar apne hathon par dam karte aur phir apne jism par pher lete thay.

Jo shakhs sachche dil se tauba karta hai Allah Ta'ala uske gunahon ko maaf farmata hai aur uske dil ko sukoon ata karta hai.

Allah Ta'ala Qur'an Majeed mein farmata hai:

"Yaad rakho! Allah ke zikr hi se dilon ko itminan hasil hota hai." (Surah Ar-Ra'd: 28)

Aaj bohat se log pareshani, bechaini aur fikron ka shikar hain. Magar jo banda Allah ki yaad ke sath sota hai uska dil mutma'in rehta hai kyun ke use yaqeen hota hai ke uska Rab uske sath hai.

Ye kalimat Allah ki tasbeeh, hamd aur azmat ka izhar hain. Inhein padhne se dil roshan hota hai aur rooh ko quwwat milti hai.

Ek momin ko chahiye ke sone se pehle apne dil ka bhi muhaseba kare. Agar kisi se na-insafi hui ho to uski islaah ka irada kare. Agar dil mein kisi ke liye bughz, hasad ya nafrat ho to use nikal de. Paak dil ke sath sona Allah ko bohat pasand hai.

Hamare buzurg aur salaf-e-saliheen sone se pehle wudu karte, Qur'an ki tilawat karte, azkar padhte aur phir Allah ke bharose par so jate thay. Wo jaante thay ke jo neend Allah ki yaad ke sath ho wo bhi ibadat ban jati hai.

Har raat hamein ek naya mauqa deti hai. Kuch log apni raat ghaflat mein guzar dete hain jabke kuch log Allah ko yaad kar ke apne Rab ko razi karte hain. Kamyab wahi hai jo apne din ka ikhtitam Allah ki ita'at aur zikr ke sath kare.

Sone se pehle ye dua bhi karni chahiye:

"Allahumma-ghfir li zunubi warhamni wahfazni waj'al nawmi rahatan li wa ibadatan ataqawwa biha ala ta'atika."

"Aye Allah! Mere gunahon ko maaf farma, mujh par reham farma, meri hifazat farma aur meri neend ko mere liye aaram aur apni ita'at ke liye taqat ka zariya bana."

Jo shakhs Allah ki yaad ke sath sota hai wo Allah ki hifazat mein sota hai. Uski raat barkat wali hoti hai, uska dil mutma'in rehta hai aur uski rooh Allah ki rahmat se sukoon paati hai.

Allah Ta'ala hamein sone se pehle kasrat se apna zikr karne ki taufeeq ata farmaye, hamare gunahon ko maaf farmaye, hamari hifazat farmaye aur har subah hamein iman aur afiyat ke sath uthaye. Aameen Ya Rabbal Aalameen. 🤲🏻
