`Why Sorrow is Good: Life Lessons on Smile, Hunger & Human Nature
An animal becomes more uncontrollable the hungrier it becomes.
But a human being becomes more out of control the more his stomach is filled.
People say sorrow is bad because when it comes, it makes one cry.
But we say sorrow is good because whenever it comes, it teaches something.
If you have nothing to give, then at least place a smile on your face. Believe that this gift is more valuable than anything else.
Not all people come into your life as relatives or friends; some come as lessons.
The changing of day and night, and the rise and fall of people are signs that this worldly life is an illusion, yet we remain drowned in negligence even with awareness.
When you are at your peak, your friends know who you are, but when you fall, you come to know who your real friends are.
A person who always stays busy in criticism and keeps finding faults in others becomes deprived of the ability to improve himself.
An invitation to any gathering is given to many people, but only those come who have a close connection. Similarly, the call of Adhan is a general invitation from Allah, but only those go to the mosque who are special.
The entire world wants you for its own benefit, but only your Lord wants you for your own benefit.
Do not love things that are going to perish in this temporary world.
Rather, love the Being who is eternal.
Your best companion is the one who stays with you even after knowing your faults, and that is only Allah, the Lord of Honor and Majesty, who is always with you.
Sincere people are very hard to find. Value those people who see their own happiness in your happiness and never leave you in your sorrow.
Love everyone, but love even more the one whose heart holds more love for you than you have for yourself.
I may become sad, I may feel grief, but I cannot become hopeless because the mercy of my Lord has no limits.
I cannot lose hope. My only belief is Allah, and belief cannot be broken.
One day, illness said to wealth: You are so fortunate that everyone tries to obtain you.
And I am so unfortunate that everyone tries to stay away from me.
Wealth replied: You are fortunate because when people obtain you, they remember Allah.
And I am unfortunate because when people obtain me, they often forget Allah.
O son of Adam: My will and your will exist, but what will happen is only what I will.
If you surrender yourself to My will, I will give you what you want.
But if you disobey My will, I will exhaust you in your own desires, and in the end only My will will prevail.
Sometimes Allah breaks our hopes and intentions to teach us that only what He wills will happen.
WHY DOES KNOWLEDGE REMAIN WITHOUT EFFECT?
A PIOUS ELDER WAS ONCE ASKED BY A PERSON: “WE LISTEN TO TEACHINGS OF KNOWLEDGE, BUT WE DO NOT BENEFIT FROM THEM. WHAT IS THE REASON?”
HE REPLIED: “THERE ARE FIVE THINGS WITHIN YOU BECAUSE OF WHICH YOU ARE DEPRIVED OF THIS BLESSING…”
(1) YOU DO NOT SHOW GRATITUDE FOR THE BLESSINGS OF ALLAH, THE LORD OF HONOR.
(2) YOU DO NOT SEEK FORGIVENESS AFTER COMMITTING SINS.
(3) YOU DO NOT ACT UPON WHAT YOU KNOW.
(4) YOU SIT IN THE COMPANY OF THE RIGHTEOUS, BUT YOU DO NOT FOLLOW THEIR TEACHINGS.
(5) WHEN YOU BURY THE DEAD, YOU DO NOT TAKE ANY LESSON FROM IT.
A PERSON WHO POSSESSES KNOWLEDGE BUT DOES NOT ACT UPON IT IS LIKE A SICK PERSON WHO HAS MEDICINE, YET DOES NOT USE IT.
IF A STONE IS THROWN INTO A SMALL POND, IT CREATES DISTURBANCE; BUT IF AN ENTIRE MOUNTAIN IS THROWN INTO THE OCEAN, IT REMAINS AS IT IS.
SIMILARLY, A NARROW-HEARTED PERSON BECOMES DISTURBED BY EVEN A HARSH WORD, WHEREAS A PERSON OF HIGH CHARACTER REMAINS CALM EVEN WHEN STORMS PASS OVER HIM.
THROUGH FOUL LANGUAGE, ABUSIVE SPEECH, AND OBSCENITY, YOU NOT ONLY DESTROY YOUR OWN DIGNITY BUT ALSO INSULT THOSE WHO RAISED AND TRAINED YOU.
NEVER FALLING IS NOT PERFECTION; RATHER, TRUE PERFECTION IS TO RISE AGAIN AFTER FALLING.
TO MERELY ATTAIN SOMEONE IS NOT LOVE; TRUE LOVE IS TO EARN A PLACE IN SOMEONE’S HEART.
THERE IS NO HARM IN SMILING; IN FACT, IT GIVES EVERYTHING. NO ONE IS TRULY RICH WITHOUT IT.
AND NO ONE IS POORER THAN THE ONE WHO LACKS A SMILE. IF YOU WANT TO EARN RESPECT AND A PLACE IN PEOPLE’S HEARTS, THEN SMILE.
