The Virtues, History, and Importance of Al-Aqsa Mosque

The Virtues, History, and Importance of Al-Aqsa Mosque

Voices of Gaza

Dear brothers and sisters,

Whenever the name of Al-Aqsa Mosque is mentioned, the hearts of believers are filled with love, respect, and reverence. It is not simply a building made of stone, nor is it merely a historical site visited by tourists. Al-Aqsa Mosque is one of the most sacred places in Islam. It is a place chosen by Allah, honored by the Prophets, and cherished by generations of Muslims throughout history.

Many Muslims know that Al-Aqsa Mosque is located in Jerusalem, but its importance goes far beyond its location. Its significance is deeply rooted in the Qur'an, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and the history of the Prophets who came before him. To understand the greatness of Al-Aqsa, we must reflect on what Allah and His Messenger ﷺ have taught us about this blessed place.

Allah سبحانه وتعالى says in the Qur'an:

"Glory be to Him Who took His servant by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haram to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We might show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing." (Surah Al-Isra, 17:1)

This verse is one of the clearest proofs of the honor and status of Al-Aqsa Mosque. Allah Himself described the land around it as blessed. When Allah declares a place to be blessed, that blessing is not temporary; it is a lasting honor granted by the Lord of the worlds.

The Night Journey, known as Al-Isra, is one of the greatest miracles given to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. During this miraculous journey, Allah transported His beloved Messenger ﷺ from the Sacred Mosque in Makkah to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. From there, the Prophet ﷺ ascended through the heavens during Al-Mi'raj.

It is important to reflect upon why Allah chose Al-Aqsa as the meeting point between the earthly journey and the heavenly ascension. Allah could have caused the Prophet ﷺ to ascend from any place on earth, yet He chose Al-Aqsa Mosque. This choice alone demonstrates the unique status of this blessed sanctuary.

When the Prophet ﷺ arrived at Al-Aqsa, he was greeted by many of the Prophets who had come before him. According to authentic narrations, Allah gathered the Prophets together, and Muhammad ﷺ led them all in prayer. Imagine the greatness of that moment. Adam عليه السلام, Nuh عليه السلام, Ibrahim عليه السلام, Musa عليه السلام, Isa عليه السلام, and countless other Prophets stood behind the final Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

This gathering symbolized the unity of the message of all the Prophets. Every Prophet called people to worship Allah alone. Every Prophet taught righteousness and obedience to Allah. By leading them in prayer, Muhammad ﷺ was shown to be the final Messenger and the seal of Prophethood.

Brothers and sisters,

Al-Aqsa Mosque also holds a unique place in Islamic worship because it was the first Qiblah of the Muslims. Before Allah commanded the believers to turn towards the Ka'bah in Makkah, Muslims prayed facing Al-Aqsa Mosque.

For many months after the migration to Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ and his companions faced Al-Aqsa during their daily prayers. This means that Al-Aqsa was the direction of worship for the earliest Muslim community.

Later, Allah revealed the command to turn towards the Ka'bah. However, this change did not diminish the honor of Al-Aqsa. Rather, it remains forever connected to the history of Islamic prayer and devotion.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also emphasized the importance of Al-Aqsa through his teachings. He said:

"Do not undertake a journey for religious devotion except to three mosques: Al-Masjid Al-Haram, this mosque of mine, and Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

This hadith places Al-Aqsa Mosque among the three most sacred mosques in Islam. No other mosque in the world shares this distinction except the Sacred Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah.

The scholars of Islam have always regarded this hadith as evidence of the exceptional virtue of Al-Aqsa. It is not simply another place of worship. It is one of the greatest sanctuaries on earth.

Throughout history, the blessed land surrounding Al-Aqsa has been associated with many Prophets. Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام lived in this region. Prophet Lut عليه السلام preached nearby. Prophet Dawud عليه السلام and Prophet Sulayman عليه السلام ruled in this blessed land.

The Prophet Sulayman عليه السلام has a particularly strong connection with Al-Aqsa. According to authentic narrations, he played a significant role in its construction and prayed that Allah would forgive those who came to worship there sincerely.

This means that Al-Aqsa is not merely connected to one Prophet or one period of history. It is connected to a long chain of Prophets who dedicated their lives to calling people towards the worship of Allah.

The blessed land around Al-Aqsa is often referred to in the Qur'an as a land of blessings. These blessings are both spiritual and historical. It is a land where revelation descended, where Prophets lived, and where righteous servants worshipped Allah.

Whenever Muslims think about Al-Aqsa, they should remember the sacrifices made by the Prophets who walked upon that land. They faced rejection, hardship, and persecution, yet they remained steadfast in their mission.

Al-Aqsa therefore teaches us valuable lessons about patience and perseverance. It reminds us that the path of truth often requires sacrifice. The Prophets who worshipped there endured trials, but they remained firm because they trusted Allah.

Dear brothers and sisters,

One of the dangers of modern times is that many Muslims know very little about Al-Aqsa Mosque. Some people recognize its name but are unaware of its virtues. Others hear about it only when political events occur.

However, our connection to Al-Aqsa should not depend on current events. Our connection to Al-Aqsa comes from our faith. Long before modern conflicts existed, Al-Aqsa was already a sacred place in Islam.

Every Muslim should strive to learn about its history, its virtues, and its significance. Parents should teach their children about Al-Aqsa just as they teach them about Makkah and Madinah.

When children learn about Al-Aqsa, they develop a stronger appreciation for Islamic history and identity. They realize that Islam's heritage extends across many lands blessed by Allah.

The companions of the Prophet ﷺ deeply understood the importance of Al-Aqsa. After the death of the Prophet ﷺ, Muslims continued to honor and preserve this sacred sanctuary.

Throughout Islamic history, scholars, rulers, and ordinary believers worked to protect and maintain Al-Aqsa. They recognized that preserving sacred places is part of preserving the legacy of Islam.

The famous Muslim leader Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi is remembered for his efforts related to Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa. His story is often cited as an example of courage, justice, and devotion to the Muslim Ummah.

However, when we remember the heroes of Islamic history, we should not focus only on military achievements. We should also focus on their faith, sincerity, and dedication to Allah. Their love for Al-Aqsa was rooted in their love for Islam.

Today, Al-Aqsa Mosque continues to hold a special place in the hearts of millions of Muslims around the world. Every day, believers make du'a for its protection and for the well-being of those who worship there.

Even if we are far away geographically, our hearts remain connected to this blessed mosque. We remember that it was honored by Allah, visited by the Prophet ﷺ, and revered by generations of believers.

Al-Aqsa also reminds us of the unity of the Muslim Ummah. Muslims come from different languages, cultures, and backgrounds, yet they all share love for the same sacred places. This shared love strengthens the bonds between believers.

When we think about Al-Aqsa, we should not only admire its history. We should also reflect upon the lessons it teaches us today.

It teaches us gratitude because Allah has blessed us with a rich spiritual heritage.

It teaches us patience because the Prophets associated with this land endured many hardships.

It teaches us faith because the Night Journey itself was a miraculous sign of Allah's power.

It teaches us unity because believers across the world share a common love for this sacred sanctuary.

It teaches us remembrance because sacred places remind us of Allah and the Hereafter.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ loved the places that Allah honored. As followers of the Prophet ﷺ, we should also respect and honor what Allah has honored.

This does not mean merely speaking about Al-Aqsa occasionally. It means learning about it, teaching others about it, making du'a for it, and maintaining a sincere connection with it in our hearts.

Whenever we hear its name, we should remember the verse of the Qur'an that speaks of the blessed surroundings of this mosque. We should remember the miraculous Night Journey. We should remember the gathering of the Prophets. We should remember that it was the first Qiblah of the Muslims.

Most importantly, we should remember that Al-Aqsa points us toward Allah. Its greatest value is not its architecture, its age, or its fame. Its greatest value is that it is a place dedicated to the worship of the Creator of the heavens and the earth.

Dear brothers and sisters,

As we conclude, let us reflect upon the immense blessings associated with Al-Aqsa Mosque. It is a mosque mentioned in the Qur'an. It is the destination of the Night Journey of the Prophet ﷺ. It is the place where the Prophets gathered behind Muhammad ﷺ in prayer. It is the first Qiblah of Islam. It is one of the three sacred mosques for which travel is especially encouraged. It is a land blessed by Allah and honored throughout the history of revelation.

May Allah increase our love for the sacred symbols of Islam. May He grant us beneficial knowledge about our religion. May He protect Al-Aqsa Mosque and preserve its sanctity. May He bless those who worship there and those who strive to honor its status. May He unite the hearts of the Muslims upon faith, righteousness, and obedience to Him.

And may Allah grant us the opportunity, if He wills, to visit Al-Aqsa Mosque, pray within its blessed grounds, and witness with our own eyes the place that has been honored by Prophets, remembered in the Qur'an, and cherished by the believers throughout the centuries.

Ameen.

Masjid-e-Aqsa Ki Fazilat, Tareekh Aur Ahmiyat

Pyare bhaiyo aur behno,

Jab bhi Masjid-e-Aqsa ka naam liya jata hai to momineen ke dil muhabbat, ehtram aur aqeedat se bhar jate hain. Yeh sirf patharon se bani hui ek imarat nahi hai aur na hi sirf ek tareekhi maqam hai jise log dekhne jate hain. Masjid-e-Aqsa Islam ke muqaddas tareen maqamat mein se ek hai. Yeh woh jagah hai jise Allah Ta'ala ne izzat bakhshi, Ambiya-e-Kiram ne jahan ibadat ki aur jise sadiyon se Musalman apne dilon mein basaaye hue hain.

Bahut se Musalman yeh jante hain ke Masjid-e-Aqsa Bayt-ul-Maqdis yani Jerusalem mein waqia hai, lekin is ki ahmiyat sirf is ke maqam tak mehdood nahi. Is ki fazilat Qur'an, Sunnat aur Ambiya-e-Kiram ki tareekh mein gehri jadain rakhti hai. Agar hum Masjid-e-Aqsa ki asal ahmiyat ko samajhna chahte hain to humein dekhna hoga ke Allah aur uske Rasool ﷺ ne is mubarak maqam ke bare mein kya irshad farmaya hai.

Allah Ta'ala Qur'an-e-Kareem mein farmata hai:

"Paak hai Woh Zaat jo apne bande ko raaton raat Masjid-e-Haram se Masjid-e-Aqsa tak le gayi, jis ke gird-o-nawah ko Hum ne barkat wala banaya, taa ke Hum use apni nishaniyan dikhayen." (Surah Al-Isra: 1)

Yeh ayat Masjid-e-Aqsa ki azmat aur maqam ko bayan karne ke liye kaafi hai. Allah Ta'ala ne khud is ke ird gird ki zameen ko barkat wali qarar diya. Jab Allah kisi jagah ko barkat wali farmaye to us ki fazilat aur sharaf ka andaza lagana bhi mushkil ho jata hai.

Isra aur Me'raj Nabi Kareem ﷺ ke azeem mo'jizat mein se ek mo'jiza hai.

Yahan ek sawal paida hota hai ke Allah Ta'ala ne Me'raj ke liye Masjid-e-Aqsa hi ko kyun muntakhib farmaya? Allah chahta to Nabi ﷺ ko kisi bhi maqam se aasmanon ki taraf bula sakta tha. Lekin Allah ne Masjid-e-Aqsa ko is azeem sharaf ke liye pasand farmaya. Yeh baat khud is maqam ki fazilat ko zahir karti hai.

Sochiye kitna azeem manzar hoga. Hazrat Adam علیہ السلام, Hazrat Nuh علیہ السلام, Hazrat Ibrahim علیہ السلام, Hazrat Musa علیہ السلام, Hazrat Isa علیہ السلام aur beshumar Ambiya Allah ke aakhri Rasool ﷺ ke peeche namaz ada kar rahe the.

Yeh waqia is baat ki daleel hai ke tamam Ambiya ka paigham ek tha.

Lekin is tabdeeli ke bawajood Masjid-e-Aqsa ki ahmiyat kam nahi hui.

Hazrat Ibrahim علیہ السلام ne is ilaqe mein qiyam farmaya. Hazrat Lut علیہ السلام ne yahan dawat-e-haq di. Hazrat Dawud علیہ السلام aur Hazrat Sulayman علیہ السلام ne isi mubarak sarzameen mein hukumat ki.

Pyare bhaiyo aur behno,

Aaj ke daur mein afsos ki baat yeh hai ke bahut se Musalman Masjid-e-Aqsa ke bare mein kam ilm rakhte hain. Kuch log sirf iska naam jante hain aur kuch log sirf us waqt iska zikr karte hain jab koi khabar ya waqia samne aata hai.

Is maqam ki hurmat aur fazilat to Qur'an aur Sunnat se sabit hai.

Apne bachon ko is ki ahmiyat bataye.

Sahaba-e-Kiram رضی اللہ عنہم bhi Masjid-e-Aqsa ki ahmiyat ko khoob samajhte the.

Duniya ke har kone mein rehne wala Musalman is maqam se muhabbat karta hai. Chahe uski zaban, rang ya mulk koi bhi ho, Al-Aqsa ke liye uske dil mein izzat zaroor hoti hai.

Aaj bhi lakhon Musalman rozana Masjid-e-Aqsa aur us se wabasta logon ke liye dua karte hain. Agarche hum door hain, lekin hamare dil is mubarak maqam se jude hue hain.

Balke isay Allah ki nishani aur Islam ki azeem amanat samjhein.

Jab bhi Masjid-e-Aqsa ka zikr ho to humein Isra aur Me'raj yaad aani chahiye. Humein Ambiya-e-Kiram ka woh mubarak ijtima yaad aana chahiye jahan Nabi Muhammad ﷺ ne imamat karwai. Humein yaad aana chahiye ke yeh Musalmanon ka pehla Qiblah tha aur Allah ne is ke gird-o-nawah ko barkat wali zameen qarar diya.

Aakhir mein, ai Musalmano, yaad rakho ke Masjid-e-Aqsa ki sab se badi ahmiyat yeh hai ke yeh Allah ki ibadat ka maqam hai. Is ki asal izzat is baat mein hai ke yahan Allah ka naam liya gaya, Ambiya ne sajde kiye aur saleheen ne apni zindagiyan Allah ki ita'at mein guzari.

Allah Ta'ala hamein Masjid-e-Aqsa ki sachchi muhabbat naseeb farmaye. Hamein is ki ahmiyat samajhne ki taufeeq ata farmaye. Hamein Qur'an aur Sunnat ke mutabiq zindagi guzarne ki taufeeq de. Allah Masjid-e-Aqsa ki hifazat farmaye, us mein ibadat karne walon ko apni aman mein rakhe aur poori Ummat-e-Muslimah ko ittihad aur khair ata farmaye.

Aameen Ya Rabbal Aalameen. 🤲🏻
