Muharram ul Haraam Virtues And Rulings

MUHARRAM UL HARAAM

 VIRTUES AND RULINGS

The Reality of Muharram

The first question that arises is — is this month sacred and honorable, or is it unlucky? Some people consider it unlucky because, in their view, martyrdom is a bad and unfortunate event. Since the martyrdom of Hazrat Husain (RA) took place in this month, they avoid holding celebrations like weddings or joyful gatherings.

However, among Muslims, this month is considered sacred, honorable, and full of blessings. The very meaning of Muharram is sacred, honored, and holy. Generally, it is thought that this month is virtuous because of the martyrdom of Hazrat Husain (RA), but that is incorrect. Its greatness existed even before Islam. It was on this day that the Bani Israel were saved from Pharaoh along with Hazrat Musa (AS), and as an expression of gratitude for this blessing, fasting on this day was prescribed.

Many other virtuous events have also taken place in this month. However, we can say that the martyrdom of Hazrat Husain (RA) became even more significant because it occurred in such a blessed month. Once it is established that this month and this day are virtuous, we should perform more good deeds in it — including weddings and celebrations — as they bring blessings.

However, it is difficult to remove these wrong beliefs that have been deeply rooted in people’s hearts for a long time. When something has filled the heart for a hundred years, it does not come out easily — it takes time and effort to remove it.
