Funeral Prayer (Namaz-e-Janazah) — Method & Virtues

🕌 Funeral Prayer (Namaz-e-Janazah) — Method & Virtues

1. The Method (How to Perform Janazah Prayer)

  1. Intention (Niyyah):
Make the intention in your heart: “I intend to perform the funeral prayer for this deceased person for the sake of Allah.”
    (No verbal niyyah is required.)

  2. Rows & Position:

    • The congregation stands facing the Qiblah.
    • The body is placed in front — for a man near the Imam’s chest, for a woman near the middle of the body.
  3. Takbirs (Four Takbeers):

    • First Takbeer: Raise your hands and say Allahu Akbar, then recite Thana (Subhanak Allahumma).
    • Second Takbeer: Say Allahu Akbar, then recite Durood Ibrahim.
    • Third Takbeer: Say Allahu Akbar, then make du‘a for the deceased (for example, “Allahumma ighfir lahu warhamhu…”).
    • Fourth Takbeer: Say Allahu Akbar, then remain silent for a short moment and finally say Salaam to the right and left.
  4. No Ruku or Sujood:
The Janazah prayer has no bowing or prostration — only standing and supplication.

2. The Virtues of Janazah Prayer

  • The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever prays the Janazah prayer for a deceased Muslim will have one Qirat of reward, and whoever follows it until burial will have two Qirats, each like the size of Mount Uhud.” (Sahih Muslim)

  • Participating in Janazah reminds a believer of death, humility, and accountability, softening the heart.

  • It is a right of every Muslim that other Muslims pray for him after death.

  • It brings forgiveness and mercy upon both — the deceased and the one who prays.

Roman Urdu

1. Namaz-e-Janazah ka Tariqa

  1. Niyyat:
Dil me yeh irada karein: “Main is marhoom ki janazah ki namaz Allah ke liye ada karta hoon.”
(Zabaan se niyyat kehna zaroori nahi hai.)

  2. Saf aur Jism ki Posiiton:

    • Namaziyon ka rukh Qiblah ki taraf ho.
    • Murda ka jism samne rakha jaye — agar mard ho to Imam ke seene ke samne, aur agar aurat ho to jism ke beech me.
  3. Chaar Takbeerein:

    • Pehli Takbeer: Haath utha kar Allahu Akbar kehna, phir Subhanak Allahumma padna.
    • Doosri Takbeer: Allahu Akbar kehkar Durood Ibrahim padna.
    • Teesri Takbeer: Allahu Akbar kehkar marhoom ke liye du‘a karna, jaise “Allahumma ighfir lahu warhamhu…”
    • Chauthi Takbeer: Allahu Akbar kehkar thoda waqfa lena aur donon taraf Salaam karna.
  4. Ruku o Sajda nahi:
Janazah ki namaz me sirf qiyam aur du‘a hoti hai, ruku ya sajda nahi.

2. Fazā’il (Gunahon ki Maafi aur Ajr)

  • Nabi Karim ﷺ ne farmaya:
“Jo shakhs kisi Musalman ke janazah me namaz padhta hai usse ek Qirat sawab milta hai, aur jo daf‘n tak saath deta hai usse do Qirat milte hain, dono Uhud pahad ke barabar hain.” (Sahih Muslim)

  • Janazah me shirkat se insaan ko maut aur aakhirat ki yaad aati hai, aur dil me tawazu aur narmi paida hoti hai.

  • Ye har Musalman ka haq hai ke uske liye musalman bhai du‘a karen.

  • Ye amal marhoom aur namaz parhne wale dono ke liye rahmat aur maghfirat ka sabab banta hai.
