Lessons on Character, Compassion, and Self-Reflection

Lessons on Character, Compassion, and Self-Reflection

People often cry over character, yet most conversations begin by judging appearances.

I have seen people who mistreat or disrespect their parents face many hardships in life. If your parents have passed away, continue seeking forgiveness for them. If they are alive, seek their pleasure and pardon, for success in life is closely tied to honoring them.

When you constantly try to convince someone of your importance, they may begin to feel superior while you become less valued in their eyes.

We are often so emotional that we end relationships within moments. If we had a little more patience and listened to the other side, many relationships could be saved.

In mathematics, if one is taken away from two, one remains. But in love, if one is removed from two, neither remains complete.

Whether people accept it or not, there are only two who remain with you in every situation: yourself and Allah.

Sometimes people need to be treated according to the way they treat others so they can recognize their own mistakes and shortcomings.

True pain is not merely feeling your own suffering. True pain is feeling sorrow when you see someone else in distress. Even animals feel their own pain; compassion is what makes a person truly human.

Never treat another person in a way that you yourself would dislike being treated.

Worship is not limited to the mosque. For a sincere believer, the home, workplace, and every aspect of life become places of worship through righteous conduct and sincere intentions.

Avoid excessive and unnecessary talk, for it hardens the heart. A hardened heart drifts away from the remembrance of Allah.

Do not look at people's faults as if you are their master. Look at them as if you are their servant, with humility and compassion.

There are generally two kinds of people in this world: those who are tested through hardships and those who are tested through ease and comfort.

When you see someone facing difficulties, pray for them and show compassion. When you see someone enjoying blessings, praise Allah and thank Him for His favors.

If people sincerely wished well for one another, many arguments, conflicts, and disputes would disappear from the world.

When a thorn pricks our foot, we quickly remove it because it causes pain. Yet when anger, hatred, jealousy, and resentment lodge themselves within our hearts, we often leave them there without making any effort to remove them.

If removing a thorn from a pathway earns reward, imagine the reward for removing hatred, envy, and malice from your heart.

How could a religion that rewards a person for removing harm from a road ever encourage harm toward others?

Those who say a person should never look back at the past are mistaken. Looking back can remind us where we started, how far we have come, and how much we still need humility.

My father once said that a person should only speak behind someone's back what he would be willing to say to their face. It seemed simple, yet I found it difficult to practice. Whenever I succeeded in acting upon it, life felt lighter, cleaner, and more peaceful.

The Love of Allah and the Wisdom of Trials

ALLAH, THE LORD OF HONOR, HAS PLACED WITHIN US THIS FEELING CALLED ‘SENSATION’ — IT DOES NOT LET US FIND PEACE. ONE COMFORT BREAKS AND ANOTHER IS BORN.

SOMETIMES THE HEART PASSES THROUGH A STRANGE STATE; IT WANTS TO GO FAR AWAY, TO A NEW WORLD WHERE THERE ARE NEITHER FRIENDS NOR ENEMIES, NEITHER SYMPATHIZERS NOR THOSE WHO CAUSE PAIN — ONLY OUR OWN SELF, SO WE MAY MEET OURSELVES BEFORE OUR LORD.

EVERY LOVE EXCEPT THE LOVE OF ALLAH, THE LORD OF HONOR, FADES AWAY. NO ONE’S LOVE IN THIS WORLD IS TRUE EXCEPT ALLAH’S. ALLAH REVEALS THE REALITY OF EVERY RELATIONSHIP AND LOVE; AFTER SHOWING EVERYTHING HE SAYS, “MY SERVANT, NOW TELL ME — WHO IS THERE FOR YOU BESIDES ME?”

WE LOVE ALLAH, THE LORD OF HONOR, WHEN HE GRANTS US SOMETHING MATERIALLY — WEALTH OR MONEY. IF HE DOES NOT, WE DO NOT CONSIDER HIM POWERFUL.

DURING PRAYER WE SAY “ALLAHU AKBAR,” ADMITTING THAT ALLAH, THE LORD OF HONOR, IS THE GREATEST — YET AS SOON AS PRAYER ENDS WE BEGIN TO VALUE MONEY MORE.

I OFTEN FELT THAT ALLAH, THE LORD OF HONOR, HATED ME — BUT THAT IS NOT TRUE. ALLAH LOVES EVERYONE. THAT IS WHY HE TESTS ME; HE TESTS THOSE HE LOVES.

WHEN HARDSHIPS, CALAMITIES, GRIEF AND PAIN COME, DO NOT PANIC OR LOSE HOPE. FACE THEM AND ASK YOUR LORD — THE LORD WHO CAN CHANGE ALL THIS CAN ALSO REPLACE SORROW WITH WELL-BEING.

THE PAIN THAT REMINDS ONE OF ALLAH, THE LORD OF HONOR, IS ITSELF A BLESSING FROM ALLAH. THE PROSTRATION OF SORROW IS FAR MORE PRECIOUS THAN THE PROSTRATION OF JOY.

INSIGHT IS GAINED ONLY WHEN ONE GIVES THANKS FOR SOMETHING THAT IS HARD TO BE PATIENT ABOUT.

HE WHO THANKED ALLAH IN PROSPERITY FOUND HIS LORD VERY NEAR IN SORROW.

THE THING YOU REJECT AS BAD AND LEAVE — SOMEONE ELSE ACCEPTS IT AS GOOD. CAN SOMETHING BE BOTH GOOD AND BAD AT THE SAME TIME? IT IS NEITHER GOOD NOR BAD EXCEPT THAT YOUR “SELF” MADE IT BAD; SOMEONE ELSE’S “SELF” MADE IT GOOD.

DO GOOD TO EVERYONE WITHOUT SEEKING YOUR OWN BENEFIT, BECAUSE THOSE WHO SCATTER FLOWERS WILL ALWAYS CARRY FRAGRANCE IN THEIR HANDS.

HOW BEAUTIFUL IS THE FEELING THAT WE SPEAK TO ALLAH, THE LORD OF HONOR, FROM OUR HEARTS, AND HE ALREADY KNOWS EVERYTHING YET STILL WANTS TO HEAR US.

ALLAH DRAWS THE ATTENTION OF THOSE HE WANTS TO REMIND BY GIVING THEM SORROW; THE FURNACE OF PAIN SOFTENS A PERSON, AND THEN GOOD DEEDS BEGIN TO APPEAR NATURALLY. SORROW IS A LADDER TO SPIRITUALITY, WHICH ONLY THE PATIENT AND GRATEFUL CAN CLIMB.

MEMORIES ARE LIKE LINES ON STONE — NEITHER SPENDING NOR TIME CAN ERASE THEM; THEY REMAIN FOREVER. TIME AND CIRCUMSTANCES MAY FORCE A PERSON TO TURN AWAY FROM THEM, BUT ONE CANNOT DENY THEIR EXISTENCE; WHEN YOU TURN BACK TO THEM THEY BECOME FRESH AGAIN.

LOVE, BUT DO NOT DESIRE TO POSSESS LOVE SO DESPERATELY. WHAT IS MEANT FOR YOUR DESTINY WILL COME TO YOU. DO NOT OBSESS OVER SOMETHING UNTIL IT SPREADS OVER YOUR BEING, BECAUSE IT WILL FIRST DEVOUR YOUR FAITH.

YOU ARE PRAYING AND STRIVING FOR THAT WOMAN’S ATTAINMENT — NOW BE PATIENT AND LEAVE THE MATTER TO ALLAH, THE LORD OF HONOR. STAYING AWAKE IN WORRY WILL NOT MAKE SOMETHING DESTINED HAPPEN; LIFE DOES NOT END WHEN SOMETHING ENDS. INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING TO ALLAH EVERY TIME YOU LOSE SOMETHING, THANK HIM THAT HE ONLY TOOK BACK ONE THING FROM YOU, NOT EVERYTHING.

REMEMBER, A WOMAN BEARS PAIN BUT NOT HUMILIATION. HER TEARS ARE NOT PRODUCED BY PAIN AS MUCH AS BY WORDS THAT HAVE INSULTED HER — PERHAPS THAT IS WHY PEOPLE THINK A WOMAN IS WEAK, BECAUSE WORDS CAN EASILY BREAK HER.
